Did that bird always make that sound, or is it a new bird?

Dr Roger Welch quietly helps out a lot of people in the local Gold Coast community and generally prefers to remain anonymous. Recently I managed to speak with a recipient of his generosity, for whom Dr Welch had purchased hearing aids.

The person had been using old hearing aids, one of which was around 20 years old, and was unable to afford new ones. The old aids were so bad they worked intermittently and the owner had given up wearing them most of the time.

Thanks to Dr Welch, the individual can now hear much better, and both personal and work life is much improved. In fact, the person is now hearing sounds which were previously never audible and commented to their spouse: “Did that bird always make that sound, or is it a new bird?”
