Free Drugs for elderly with
vision disease

Thousands of elderly Gold Coasters suffering
a debilitating eye condition have a month's free access to a
world-leading treatment. The drug Lucentis treats wet macular
degeneration and is injected in to the eye to suppress the
disease. Dr Roger Welch, an ophthalmologist at The Vision
Centre in Southport, said high costs had prevented people from
using the treatment.
"It is being provided free by it's supplier
throughout this month ahead of becoming available under the
pharmaceutical benefits scheme from August 1," he said.
"The Gold Coast has a large aged population
suffering macular degeneration and the availability will help
save the sight of many who simply couldn't afford the
treatment.
"People needing the Lucentis drug until now
have had to pay up to $2000 for a month's treatment, so the
free offer and the coming availability of Lucentis under the
pharmaceutical benefits scheme will provide significant
financial relief to the elderly.
