Retinal Detachment
Retinal detachment is an eye complaint where a layer of tissue on the back of the eye peels
away from the tissue beneath it. Without treatment, a small detachment may result in a complete retinal detachment
which can cause severe loss of vision or blindness. Retinal detachment can be spontaneous but may also be cause by
injury to the head or eye and even the shrinking of the Vitreous (the fluid in the eye) which pulls on the tissue
as it contracts. Injury or trauma may cause a small tear which may results in retinal detachment as the Vitreous
leaks into the layers and lifts them away.
Symptoms of retinal detachment include; an increase in flashes and floaters (a shower or sudden
increase in number), a shadow or veil over vision or straight lines appearing wavy or distorted as well as central
vision loss. Treatment includes sclera buckle surgery, where a buckle is placed around the outside of the eye to
push the retina back on, cry therapy or laser to the tear in the retina to create scar tissue that seals the
area.
