Dr André K. Théron

  Dr Théron is a popular Gold Coast general ophthalmologist who joined the Vision Centre team in 2003.

  He completed undergraduate studies at the University of Witwatersand in Johannesburg South Africa in 1988 before completing registrar training at the University of Natal , Durban where he received his Masters Degree in Ophthalmology.

  Dr Théron undertook extensive research into the impacts of shingles and HIV on vision and research in glaucoma surgery and antimetabolites. He completed South African fellowship examinations in Cape Town and was awarded a scholarship to the University College of London. Dr Théron was actively involved in the development of cataract surgery outreach programs in South Africa at a state level.

  In 1998, Dr Théron relocated to the Gold Coast where he became the driving force behind the establishment of ophthalmological services at the Gold Coast Public Hospital and Robina Hospital and established the accreditation and training of registrars. In 2002, Dr Théron became senior registrar at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital in Melbourne. This role enabled him to gain his full Australian qualifications (FRANZCO) to practice in Australia before returning to the Gold Coast Hospital and joining Vision Centre.

  Dr Théron continues to be actively involved in the Gold Coast's public health system as a Visiting Medical Officer. He provides clinic and surgery sessions and is involved with the teaching and training.

  His main areas of interest include cataract surgery, glaucoma/glaucoma surgery, macular degeneration and its current treatment options including the new 'cold' laser, diabetic retinopathy, ocular surface disorders and eye lid abnormalities. Dr Théron is currently involved in two international studies on diabetic eye disease and was recently appointed Clinical Assistant Professor at Bond University.

  Dr Théron practices at both Vision Centre Southport and Vision Centre Robina.
